About

This webpage is dedicated to several courses of Dr. Garcia at the City & Metropolitan Planning at the University of Utah.

  • Westside Studio: It is a signature experience workshop that brings CMP students into Salt Lake City’s Westside community, an area of the City with the highest concentration of minorities, and works with local community councils to tackle a variety of issues in those neighborhoods.

  • Westside Leadership Institute: It is a bilingual course in partnership with University Neighborhood Partners (UNP) and a local office of the national organization, Neighborworks, combined with CMP students and area residents taking continuing education courses.

  • Chicago LAB: It is a college-wide studio in collaboration with the Puerto Rican Agenda in the Humboldt Park neighborhood of Chicago which is dedicated to gentrification mitigation and resistance methods.

  • Puerto Rico Resiliency Lab: It is the only CMP studio with Global Learning outcomes and operates as a multi-year course in the small, coastal town of Loiza, Puerto Rico—I was awarded the John R. Park Fellowship to develop the course and a Global Learning Across the Disciplines (GLAD) grant to deepen its efficacy.

  • Zoning for Equity: It is a collaborative project between 14 planning programs nationwide dedicated to learning about how the discriminatory policies of the past have shaped policy and how we can make zoning more equitable today.
